Prints by Joost Gerritsen

The identity of things.

The November print

It takes two.

The ideas for my small setups come to me while walking, which is an integral part of my creative process. I walk, I look, I collect. I bring things home to my studio, where they often need time to simmer. I have to get used to them and get to know them.

Creating a still life is a process of carefully putting things together in a way that feels right. The character of the materials—their structure and size—often suggests how they should be placed. All things have a character, a soul. The art lies in making the right combinations to strengthen each element’s character, until collectively, they begin to communicate.
